THE TEAM IS HEADING TO BRAZIL

The Canadian Deaf Swim Team is traveling to Sao Paulo, Brazil on August 22nd for the 5th World Deaf Swimming Championships, August 25 – September 1st, 2019. The coach leading the team is Judy Baker who has been coaching the team for the past four years. She coached the team at both the 2015 World Deaf Swimming Championships in Texas, USA and the 2017 Deaflympics in Samsun, Turkey.

Judy has been coaching swimming since 1983 after a long and successful swimming career. Judy was a National Canadian swim team member for four years, nationally ranked at the age of 13, and world ranked for 400 IM, 200 Fly and 800 Free. Judy broke the Canadian record for the 800 meter free, was the first female inducted to the NAIA swimming and diving hall of fame, and was named athlete of the year for Simon Fraser University.

Upon achieving her Level 3 coaching certification, Judy became Head Coach of the Winskill Dolphins in Delta, B.C. She had many successes, earning youth coach of the year in 1998. While stepping away from full time coaching for a few years, she continued to coach two Master Swim teams and received the Masters Swimming Canada’s 2012 Excellence in Coaching Award. In 2018, Judy returned to full time coaching, becoming the Head Coach of the Winskill Dolphins Swim Club.

Judy instills strong training habits in her swimmers while building a sound technical platform in all four competitive strokes. Her objective is to provide an opportunity for all of her swimmers to attain his or her maximum potential in competitive swimming.

The Canadian Deaf Swim team is honoured to have Judy as their coach once again, and so thankful to her for volunteering her time and dedication to the team.
